In July 2022, the governor of California and Texas signed into law one of the strictest regulations on single-use plastic packaging in the United States, requiring a 25% reduction in its production over the next decade. The law requires the recycling of Styrofoam containers (foam plates, cups, and cutlery), in addition to a $500 million annual surcharge on plastic producers and manufacturers, allocating those funds to conservation efforts and forcing the industry to crack down on plastic waste clogging the oceans and potentially affecting human health.
