Edmonton Recycles 35 tons of EPS waste From Local Landfill During Last Year
Do you know that the global EPS recycling rate is less than 2%? As a type of plastic, EPS has always been excluded from plastic recycling. The recycling of PET plastic bottles is well known, but most people don't know that EPS is actually recyclable. Even though some people know about EPS recycling, due to the high cost of traditional recycling methods, dissuades many people who want to recycle waste EPS. At the same time, traditional EPS disposals methods such as landfill and incineration have led to more and more serious environmental pollution. EPS waste piles up in landfills. As the EPS recycling industry grows, many municipalities are struggling to explain misconceptions about EPS recycling and implement polystyrene recycling activities.
Edmonton is a vibrant city, the northernmost largest metropolis, and the capital of the Canadian province of Alberta. In support of Canada's EPS recycling policy, Edmonton will begin EPS recycling operations in 2021. The EPS recycling in the first year was very successful, and the public actively participated. So in February 2022, Edmonton expanded its recycling scale, accepting large EPSs such as block, packaging, and coolers for free at all four urban eco-stations. In 2022, Edmonton recycled a total of 35 tons of EPS waste. Before recycling programs were introduced, this highly recyclable EPS waste had only one destination: landfill.
What happens if EPS waste is not recycled? EPS breaks down easily, so when EPS is thrown in the trash, it can contaminate other recyclables as well. And the EPS breaks down into little beads and enters our natural environment, where birds and fish eat them. EPS can also get into waterways and end up as plastic pollution. Over time, our ecological environment and food chain will be damaged. However, EPS waste is now recycled so that it doesn't go into a landfill, greatly extending the life of the existing landfill. Also, EPS recycling means that nearly 90 percent of the commercial and residential waste stream is reduced. The recycled EPS used mostly for home decor and framing also reduces the number of trees that have to be felled to make these products.
All in all, EPS recycling can have a positive environmental impact. For the city, EPS Recycling will help build a positive city image, improve the city environment, provide more job opportunities and generate revenue. That's because the waste EPS is compressed and then sold to recyclers.
