Gilford Intends to Purchase A Styrofoam Densifier for Recycling and Saving Landfill Costs
Guilford, in central New Hampshire, used to be a low-key, unheralded town. But more recently, Gilford's efforts to improve the environment have made Gilford famous, especially for recycling, which Gilford does well. In 2020, Gilford opened its Solid Waste Treatment Center, which separates various forms of waste for recycling and resale. Therefore, this year Gilford plans to start Styrofoam recycling and purchase a Styrofoam densifier to process waste and reduce the expense of the landfill.
Gilford is confident in Styrofoam recycling. Gilford bought a baler to process their recycled waste and eventually sold it, according to Gilford's director of public works, Theriault. The recycling center's revenue reached $50,000 last year. But in the past, it will cost about $35,000 to dispose of those waste materials. So, that means they earned $85,000 from recycling waste. When it comes to Styrofoam waste, people in Gilford know that it’s 100% recyclable.
Styrofoam is commonly used in packaging, insulation, and food containers such as takeout and egg cartons. As a waste product, it takes up a lot of valuable space in landfills and during transportation and can take centuries to decompose. We all know, that the Amazon effect has a big impact on people's lives. After all, it is very common for Amazon to deliver goods to your door, and the accumulation of Styrofoam waste in people's homes is also increasing. This needs to be fixed. Gilford decides to lighten the load on landfills.
To enable Styrofoam recycling, Theriault and Cindy of the plastics portion of the New Hampshire Networking Group are driving a project. Styrofoam waste is collected by members of the rotary clubs in surrounding towns, and the collected Styrofoam will be transported to Gilford for unified recycling. However, now Gilford lacks a Styrofoam densifier to process Styrofoam waste. But the Gilford selectboard approved this project. Theriault would then only need to apply for a grant to install an electrical connection for the Styrofoam densifier. The pilot project is scheduled to be launched in early June. In June, Gilford will officially start a six-month Styrofoam recycling program, process waste Styrofoam through a Styrofoam densifier and sell ingots to recyclers.
A Styrofoam densifier shreds, heats, and melts Styrofoam waste. This process squeezes air out of the Styrofoam and the remaining plastic is compressed into ingots. These ingots can be sold to recyclers and made into various framing products, insulation, and more. INTCO Recycling sources Styrofoam waste and ingots from all over the world and sells GREENMAX Styrofoam densifiers. If you are interested in Styrofoam recycling like Gilford, please contact us.
