Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, is taking a giant leap towards enhancing its recycling program. With the assistance of a $50,000 grant from the Foodservice Packaging Institute's (FPI) Polystyrene Recycling Coalition (FRC), the county is now collecting post-consumer polystyrene, including foodservice packaging, at all four of its full-service recycling centers.



The grant from FRC has helped in funding the purchase and installation of a polystyrene densifier at one of its four recycling centers as part of the program launch for polystyrene  PS recycling. The polystyrene densifier is a critical piece of equipment that compacts polystyrene products, such as cups, egg cartons, foodservice containers, and packaging materials, into polystyrene blocks or ingots. This way, the county can easily transport the polystyrene to end markets to be recycled.
The polystyrene densifier will make it much easier to recycle polystyrene products. Previously, recycling polystyrene products was a challenge due to their lightweight and bulky nature, which made it difficult to transport. However, with the help of the polystyrene densifier, these products can be compacted and transported efficiently.



Mecklenburg County is also planning to sell the polystyrene ingots to local end markets to be manufactured into architectural moldings and picture frames. This means that the polystyrene waste will be turned into valuable products, thereby reducing the amount of waste in landfills.
The new program will not only help the county meet its recycling goals but also benefit the environment by reducing waste in landfills. Recycling polystyrene products saves energy and natural resources that would otherwise be used to produce new products. It also helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which are a significant contributor to climate change.
