Recycling of EPS-SURE Project: Turing Fish Boxes into Yogurt Containers
Expanded polystyrene (EPS), also known as polystyrene, is commonly used as packaging for storing, transporting, and displaying fresh produce such as fish due to its excellent thermal insulation, protection, and food safety properties. However, most of these packages end up in landfill anyway. However, the industry has been developing, and EPS recycling is no longer unknown. More research teams have begun to explore other recycling methods besides machine recycling. Now, a group of four companies, including Anape, has just launched a 3-year research project called EPS-SURE to provide a technically, environmentally, and economically feasible solution to transform EPS fish boxes into a valuable resource.
In fact, EPS fish boxes are 100% recyclable, but in commercial circulation, they do not get the attention they deserve due to the difficulty of transportation. At present, the most recycled EPS waste is EPS packaging waste and EPS board. Moreover, the growth of the EPS recycling rate may have reached a bottleneck period, so many countries are developing recycling methods other than machine recycling, such as chemical recycling. The recycling process for this project is also in the pilot phase. Recycling EPS fish boxes into yogurt boxes is a considerable environmental and technical challenge because there is currently no such successful technology in Europe. The project will demonstrate end applications with great added value that will make the management of EPS fish boxes profitable and will also accelerate the efficiency and proportion of recycling.
By promoting recycling, the dumping of EPS boxes in Europe could be reduced by 80%, according to estimates by those in charge. This number is undoubtedly very encouraging. After all, for European coastal countries, the fishery is a part of very strong economic support, and EPS fish boxes are necessary during transportation. However, the pollution caused by EPS fish boxes cannot be ignored. If the project is successful, marine pollution will be controlled and EPS fish boxes will be recycled more often. This ambitious and innovative project to turn fish boxes into yogurt containers is supported by the European Commission within the framework of its LIFE program in the field of the environment and is part of the EU's new circular economy strategy.
Now people can look forward to this project, new breakthroughs will take some time to achieve. At present EPS fish box recycling can actually be realized by machine recycling. INTCO Recycling can provide machines that can recycle EPS boxes after drying water. For more information, if you are interested, please contact us.
