Even if the cold winter could not prevent people’s determination of recycling and reuse. Last week, the residents in Beverly, Massachusetts had took part in a Styrofoam recycling activity. Because Beverly has received a grant of 3,300 dollars to help their waste recycling project. After discussion, this grant is used in the Styrofoam recycling activity which was co-hosted by Beverly and Salem.



Waste recycling is what the government encourages people to do. So, the government has set a state funding that rewards organizations and communities for their waste reducing, reusing, and recycling programs. And the grant from The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection Bureau of Air & Waste is a part of the state funding. In the past, Beverly has launched some activities which truly helped reduce plastic pollution, such as distributing reusing bags to some enterprises. This time, the compliance officer who manages the city’s waste reduction has turned his eyesight at widespread Styrofoam waste.



From a distance, the Styrofoam waste scattered by the roadside looks like snow. The massive pile of Styrofoam waste in the landfill looks like thick snow. But unlike snow, Styrofoam will not melt, let alone decompose. Its existence can only pollute the environment and damage the water system. This is one of the reasons why Beverly decides to recycle it. On the other hand, they want to prove with their action that Styrofoam recycling can bring more benefits and significance once people have taken corrective measures. There is so much controversy about Styrofoam right now, but fortunately, Beverly's attempt at recycling Styrofoam has been a success.

After the city announced the recycling event of Styrofoam, residents are extremely enthusiastic about this. Even though the weather was cold on the day of the event, they took their waste Styrofoam to the designated recycling site spontaneously, with a satisfied and proud smile on everyone's face. When being asked why they were so happy to be involved in the recycling campaign, they replied: "I didn't know what to do with Styrofoam until I threw it in the trash, and now I know the material has recycling value." They are happy to be able to contribute to environmental protection and urban construction.
